Local council is urging the public to beware of coming in contact with blue-green algae ahead of the warmer weather.
Hot, humid conditions with little rainfall can cause unsafe amounts of blue-green algae in popular swimming and fishing spots.
One area affected in particular is Lake Guthridge in Sale.
Wellington Shire Council will be installing clearly visible signs at the location until test results deem it safe.
Dogs should also be kept out of the water, as the algae can make them just as sick as humans if they come in contact with it.
