Petition started to stop battery plant in Morwell

A petition has been created in hope of stopping the construction of a large battery recycling plant in Hazelwood North, just out of Morwell.

The Chinese based Chunxing Corporation wants to process 50,000 tonnes of vehicle batteries into 28,000 tonnes of refined lead from the property in Fourth Road, Hazelwood North.

Chunxing Australia’s CEO Lakshman Jayaweera, has stated local construction would be used for the initial $33 million investment, and the finished factory would create at least 50 full time jobs.

But 733 people who have already signed the petition, have outlined certain environmental concerns to be taken into consideration, such as the factory’s emissions and waste water.

However, Jayaweera stated that the factory emissions would be “minimal” – 5 times lower than the Environment Protection Authority Standards.

What do you think? Should we be concerned about the emissions from the factory, or is this a good opportunity for the Latrobe Valley?
